Red rain

The recent red rain in India has caused something of a stir.

Paranormal? I think not.

There have been suggestions that the red component is made up of extraterrestrial microorganisms. The inability of researchers to find DNA in the samples has been cited as 'proof' of this.

Perhaps there's no DNA to find? Perhaps it's sand?

Saharan sand has fallen on the south of England before. It happens. Fine sand can travel a long, long way.

Another potential explanation has been algae. Those researchers are puzzled as to how algae can fall as rain.

With many well documented falls of frogs, fish, shellfish and all sorts of other bizarre things, I hardly think a fall of algae will pose any difficulty.

I'd really like to see that red dust reassemble itself into a giant demon. Now that would be a paranormal event worth investigating.

I have an acquaintance who writes such stories. I'll suggest it to him. It's the same one who wrote the tale that started all those urban legends of 'death calls' on mobile phones.

I suspect he'd prefer I hadn't said that.

Killer sand. That's a new one. To me.

Well, killer sand appeared in 'The Mummy', but that's not the way I envisaged it here. Not a sandstorm run by a demon, but sand that is a demon. All ground up; instant demon - just add water. Okay, Clive Barker did the 'demon in bits' in 'Cabal', and there was an old Christopher Lee/Peter Cushing film in which a demon skeleton was revived by water. Powdered demon, though - that's new.

Sands come in varying colors. Wonder what color a demon would choose to wear?

Of the available sand colours, red would be a good bet.

Black for the body and red for the eyes, or maybe red for the body and black for the eyes. Let's face it. The eyes have to be different to get the best 'scary' look. I'm sure a demon would consider that important don't you. Isn't instilling fear part of the fun for the evil ones?

Perhaps no eyes at all? Demons aren't restricted by our five senses. Some can find you perfectly well in total darkness.

Yes, even with your blankets pulled over your head.

I sleep with my feet out of the covers just to taunt them. Brave, uh?

Brave, yes, since you've clearly never met one.

I'll reserve judgement until you face something with seven eyes and limbs that move to fast to count.

If you're lucky, it won't have a foot fetish.
